(This message was added in version 6.7.0.) in /home/xjpiftx2okaf/public_html/wp-includes/functions.php on line 6121Constantly updated with all of the latest information our Codex has two major purposes. The first is to help you understand the world around you better, and the second is to help you explore, shape, and lead the future.
Next, because the codex is so now large we offer it in two formats: a SINGLE BOOK or as EIGHT MINI BOOKS. While the content is the same you can choose the best way to consume it yourself.
Being able to explore today’s world and the future is one thing, but being able to bring all that information back in house to discuss it, chart a plan of action, and develop actionable strategies to lead and prosper in the new world we are creating is another. So, with this challenge at the forefront of our mind we have created three custom Foresight Programs that you can run in your organisation.
The first program can be run in an hour, the second is more detailed and designed to be run over the course of a few months, and the third is our most comprehensive yet and is designed with the idea of continuous organisational exploration and transformation in mind.
There is only one Trends Codex in the world that covers everything – every STEEP trend, every Line of Business trend, and every Sector trend. Can you guess which one?
Designed to help you quickly explore and understand how the world around you works there is no other trends book in the world that has the depth or breadth of the 311 Institute Annual Trends Codex. So we hope you enjoy it.
VIDEO PREVIEW . HUNDREDS of trends at your finger tips .
As our world gets more connected and populous, and as our technological capabilities exceeds the expectations of even the best science-fiction writers, it is inevitable that the number of trends organisations need to keep abreast of will only increase. So, as our main Codex, above, continues to grow to the point where printing it is now problematic, we took the decision to break it into smaller more manageable mini books which you can download below and digest at your leisure.
RAVAGED BY climate change and geopolitical instability, the global pandemic, inequality, xenophobia, war, and rapid technological change, it would be all too easy to say that we live in unparalleled times and are all being subjected to exceptional trends. But that would be a fallacy because just a scant hundred or so years ago the people of the time were living through their own pandemic, their own wars, their own technological transformations, and staring down the barrel of all manner of other challenges.
Look at today’s world from another viewpoint and since those times the world has experienced its longest ever period of peace. Famine, illiteracy, and poverty are at their lowest levels since records began, and our quality of life and lifespans are the best they’ve ever been. And those are just some of the highlights.
Even though we all crave the safety and security of absolute certainty humanity has always lived in turbulent and uncertain times, and as much as uncertainty can be our foe, it’s also been responsible for helping us become who we are as a species. It’s forced us to adapt, to think outside of the box, to look at problems from different vantage points, and it’s helped give us the mental tool kit we need to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges on a near daily basis.
The past and the future have always been strange bedfellows, then right in the middle of both of them, in the present, there’s us – trying to reconcile the certainty of the past that we know we can’t change with the uncertainty of the future that we can change.
Today every one of us has more power to change the world than ever before, to build products and services that change the lives of billions of people and impact the planet for the better at a scale and speed that would have been unimaginable just twenty years or so ago. However, as the global rate of change accelerates we face another challenge – the ability to ingest enough information and generate insights that help us formulate new product concepts and business strategies at speed.
At the 311 Institute it’s our mission to simplify the future, put it in your hands, and help you navigate and lead it, and this and the other complimentary codexes in our Codex of the Future series we help you do that, and much more.

]]>WHY THIS MATTERS IN BRIEF
Connectivity, digitisation, and new technologies are accelerating the rate of global disruption, and its impact on global business, culture, and society is increasing with every new cycle. As a result strategic foresight and scenario planning are now must haves not nice to haves.
THE FUTURE is ours to create and while we all have the responsibility to help create a utopian, rather than dystopian, future its benefits must be accessible to all of us. For many of us though reaping the benefits of this future, whether those are cultural, economic, or social, is little more than a pipe dream. Therefore at the 311 Institute it’s our mission to democratise access to the future and support and amplify the voices of people who create and promote change for good, which then brings me to the reason why this codex exists – to help each of you unlock your own potential and play your role in creating this fair future.
The purpose of this codex is to give academia and governments the insights and tools they need to future proof students against the best and worst our shared future has to offer.
As a futurist I have the privilege of having a front row seat to the future and because I work with many of the household brands you use every day to build it it’s arguable that I know more about it’s intricacies, oddities, and nuances than anyone, which puts me in a good position to harness my knowledge and insights for you and your students benefits.
As a result of this I see first hand the giant gap between our current “Industrial Age” education systems curricula, forged long ago and little changed since, and the education system we need to have to ensure our children prosper not flounder in the future we’re creating.
I’m also not the only one with this view. From billionaire philanthropists and business leaders, to parents, regulators, teachers, world leaders, and even the education ministers of countries such as the UK and UAE I have yet to meet anyone who thinks that our current education system is fit enough to meet the of our future society or workforce. Or even today’s.
Ultimately, if left unaddressed this gap risks leaving hundreds of millions of individuals around the world in a future limbo where their future lives will be dominated by technology led change, which will happen at increasing speed, and by a jobs market that’s in a constant state of flux which they’ll struggle to find a place in, navigate, and understand.
It is my hope, therefore, that this codex and the Exponential Futures Curriculum (EFC) will help close this gap and give everyone, irrespective of their ability, background, or circumstances, the opportunity to contribute and prosper in the future.

The presence of hundreds of powerful emerging technologies is accelerating the rate of global business, cultural, and societal change, and this first of a kind codex is your guide to understanding, simplifying, and navigating them all and their future implications.
VIDEO PREVIEW . HUNDREDS of Exponential Technologies at your finger tips .
THIS EMERGING technology codex is your front row seat to the future. But not just any future – yours. Today, it’s plain for everyone to see that humanity is on the cusp of a new technological era bought on by the development and adoption of increasingly powerful sci-fi like technologies. It’s also clear that it won’t be the last time we witness such a transformation in our lifetimes as the rate of progress continues to accelerate.
In the past twenty years humanity has made more technological progress than we did in the previous five hundred, and in the next thirty years we will make more progress than we did in the previous twenty thousand – a staggering achievement by any measure. And all of tomorrow’s new industries, products and services, will have their foundations in the technologies we are developing today, many of which, like Artificial Intelligence, will be as revolutionary as the invention of electricity and fire.
As the rate of change accelerates, in some areas at what seems like breakneck speed, our ability to track all the developments and their downstream implications will continue to become more challenging. It’s this that’s driven me to create this Codex, a living Codex that I hope will become a single point of reference for people who want to see what the future holds for us all.
Today just under half of the world’s population is connected, and while that figure will continue to tick upwards over the next decade, for those of us who are fortunate enough to be able to tap into its democratising power, technology is giving us all the ability to transform our lives, and the lives of everyone around us, in ways that very few people could imagine less than two generations ago – let alone fifty years ago. And if we have come this far in just fifty years, then just imagine what the next fifty holds…
Today is the slowest that we’ll move ever again, and while the future holds great promise it’s important to remember we are all just caretakers in time, and that each of us has the responsibility, and the power, to safeguard and improve not just our lives and the lives of everyone on our blue planet, but also the lives and livelihoods of future generations.
Together we can change the world, and, as we create our legacy, the legacy of a better future, we owe it to each other to make sure noone is left behind. My sincerest regards to you all,

Connectivity, digitisation, and new technologies are accelerating the rate of global disruption and its impact on global business, culture, and society is increasing with every new cycle. Yesterdays innovation and strategy frameworks are showing their age so we’ve re-invented them for the Exponential Era.
WELCOME TO the 311 Institute’s first of a kind ExPLORER Framework, a disruptive innovation and strategy framework whose sole purpose is to help you transform your company into a future fit Exponential Enterprise that is prepared at every level to explore and lead the exponential future by discovering new disruptive opportunities, building new disruptive market leading products, and developing winning go to market strategies that tap into the new ways that the world does business.
Ask anyone of any background from anywhere on the planet whether or not they think the rate of change and disruption is faster now than it was ten years ago and you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t think that today the rate of change is faster than ever before.
Furthermore, ask them whether or not they think the rate of change will be even faster in another ten years time and, again, you’ll be very hard pressed to find anyone who thinks we’ll be moving either at the same rate we are today or slower.
Despite this rate of change though what many people don’t realise is that as the world becomes increasingly digitised and inter-connected, and as machines become increasingly creative and intelligent in their own right, the rate of change, and therefore the rate of disruption is not just going to accelerate it’s going to accelerate exponentially – so much so that even today we can see a point of time where it will be possible to disrupt entire global industries, from financial services to manufacturing, from energy to retail, and beyond in just a single day. And as improbable and as sci-fi like as that sounds I’ll show you how we achieve that in the following chapters.
Which then brings us to the conundrum of trying to remain relevant and establish leadership positions in this increasingly frantic fast paced world, and that’s what we’ll be addressing during this program.

]]>WHY THIS MATTERS IN BRIEF
All the world’s a game as they say, but for some the stakes are higher than others, and as we look into the future technology will be playing a much greater role in keeping us all fit, health, and sporty.
THROUGHOUT THE annals of time there have been very few human activities capable of overcoming even the most deeply entrenched societal and political divisions as effortlessly as sport so it’s little wonder that it holds a magical place in people’s hearts and minds, whether those people are amateur or professional sportsmen and women, or simply ardent on lookers and fans.
Sport’s reach is also so broad and so all encompassing that it’s impossible to talk about it as a singular topic in isolation to everything else. Furthermore, when you consider the fact that as we ourselves and the world around us continues to change at an increasingly furious rate all these changes ultimately allow us to re-write the rules of the game, every game, in ways we never previously imagined.
From the arrival of new, intelligent opponents that are nothing more than digital ether through to the transformation of the human condition and development of increasingly amorphous and smart arenas that span everything from neighbourhoods and the globe to the stars beyond sport has a bright and exciting future ahead of it.

]]>WHY THIS MATTERS IN BRIEF
We think we already live in a world swamped with content, but as new creator tools emerge and AI powered Creative Machines get better at creating their own DeepFakes and synthetic content there will be significant economic and societal implications.
THERE’S NO getting away from the fact that today we live in a VUCA world dominated by technology and speed. However, despite today’s furious rate of change, which is accelerating, unknown to many we have already reached the point when global business, culture, and society can be disrupted and transformed in just a single day.
Currently the most prominent example of this was Meta’s Libra cryptocurrency, now Diem, and now sold off. Had regulators approved its use, rather than freaking out about it, the way it was designed and its ability to be instantly adopted by billions of users would have, in the words of the leaders of all G7 central banks, transformed the global financial services industry and ended the state control of money over night.
In part the speed of change we’re witnessing today is because over half the world’s population is connected and can access new digital products and services at an unprecedented speed and scale. And this includes content in all its forms.
As impossible as it might sound though this rate of change is about to get exponentially faster as increasingly autonomous and sophisticated so called Creative Machines, essentially Artificial Intelligence’s that can innovate and produce new content and products at digital speed, and often in simulation, emerge and come onto the market.
Today not only are these machines and tools helping democratise content creation for millions of creators around the world in new ways, but they’re also helping fuel the development of increasingly authentic and realistic DeepFakes, and they are also already generating their own procedural never ending content streams that, as they improve in quality, will have significant implications for creators and consumers everywhere.
Now, with the ability to create all manner of digital content, from books and music, to games, videos, and virtual worlds, at digital speed, procedurally, humanity stands on a cliff edge where the content that shapes our world, and our opinions and views of it, will never be the same again. No longer will humans be the sole creators and machines the tools, soon machines will be both the creators and the tools.

Our society, and all of the devices and things that surround us, are becoming increasingly smart and connected representing a paradigm shift in how we develop, consume, and innovate all manner of products and services.
AS HUMANS there’s never been a time when we haven’t lived in a connected world – whether it’s the trees that connect with the Earth and the sky or ourselves who connect with one another and the bounty of things around us. Today though technology has evolved our concept of connectedness.
Not only has it changed how we connect with one another and what we can connect with, but it has also changed how we experience the world and our own potential. And by doing so it has ultimately changed every conceivable aspect of the Human Experience.
In this Codex I discuss the future of communications and the connected society, and explore their impact on global culture, industry, and society.

]]>WHY THIS MATTERS IN BRIEF
WE ARE TAUGHT TO FEAR BEING AUTOMATED, AND PEOPLE HAVE A POINT. BUT BY AUTOMATING DIFFERENT TASKS PEOPLE OFTEN OVERLOOK THE FACT THAT IT CAN ALSO DEMOCRATISE ACCESS TO SKILLS AND BOOST HUMAN POTENTIAL THOUSANDS FOLD.
You might ask why this book is a world first, and that’s a great question. Well, not only is this the first performance running book ever written by a 10 year old, but the book itself was written by an Artificial Intelligence (AI) called ChatGPT for free in the time it takes to run one 5Km Basingstoke Parkrun, or about seventeen minutes.
Furthermore, all the graphics and images are a first of a kind, never seen before they were all generated by a Generative AI called MidJourney in under a day from scratch and for less than £20.
How we made the book and its implications on jobs and the future
We live in a world full of sci-fi-like technology and while these amazing tools, like the AI’s we used to create this book exist today, Caiden used his own knowledge of elite running to create the AI prompts for the text, then used his creativity to create the prompts for the AI generated artwork. He also used his understanding of books and story telling to generate the flow and format of the book, then used his software skills to create the layout and design of it, while constantly checking the accuracy of the content and getting feedback on it all from his coaches. And, as dad, I just had oversight.
On the one hand the point of this book is to produce a complete performance running guide for young aspiring athletes based on the real life experiences of a winning Team GB athlete, and Caiden hopes he’s accomplished that. On the other though it’s to demonstrate and educate people about the power that emerging technologies like these have to change the world, their impact on the future of work, their ability to democratise access to skills that were previously the domain of “human experts,” to stir debate, and to showcase their ability to boost human potential and productivity by thousands fold.
As the world around us changes at an increasingly fast pace we are surrounded by threats and opportunities. Take AI for example, in the long run the AI’s we used to help us produce this book in time could automate over 230 Million jobs in the creative sector – a $6 Trillion sector – as well as coding and many other job categories.
As they do this these technologies democratise access to those skills we used to rely on human experts for. After all, as good as Caiden is at running generating this quality of artwork this quickly and for next to nothing is – or was until now – beyond him. Nonetheless, by using his knowledge of coaching, running, and technology Caiden has done what very few people thought possible and he did most of it faster than he runs many of his races.
Technology is a tool, and as many of them become increasingly smart and capable they open the door to new possibilities. And, in our case, we chose to use them to guide and inspire others, show you the art of the possible, and raise money for charity.
It’d be all too easy to think that Caiden left the Artificial Intelligences to do all the heavy lifting and to a degree he did – after all they generated almost all the text and every image for it. Despite this amazing feat though all of it, without exception, was directed and micro managed by him, and there was a lot of micro management.
While producing this book was a lot easier than producing everything by hand the old fashioned way, like in 2022, it wasn’t easy. We had to watch out for AI bias, double and triple check everything, then put it all into a readable format – the book you now see before you.
During the project we learned a lot about the potential but also the limits of these powerful world changing AI’s. For example, ChatGPT is pretty generic with its facts – great for high level content but rubbish with the detailed stuff. MidJourney meanwhile seems slightly biased and literally has a mind of its own which can be both interesting and challenging. It also hates clashing different creative genres together and would almost always create awful looking art, it doesn’t like fingers or artwork involving human emotions, and forget anything too complex such as using it to generate a person on a treadmill.
Great as they are both of them had strengths and weaknesses that we had to navigate, but we did everything HUNDREDS of times faster and cheaper than people would have been able to in 2022.

]]>WHY THIS MATTERS IN BRIEF
There are some people who say we already live in a simulation, and while we will never know for sure what we can be certain of is that in the future we could be.
IF I posed the idea that we were all living in a simulation in the fifteenth century then I might have been burned at the stake. If I’d posed the idea in the early nineteenth century then I’d have likely been labelled a crackpot, and if I’d posed the idea in the 1960’s I’d have been labelled a science fiction writer.
But if I posed the idea today, as a number of billionaire polymaths have recently, it would be discussed and debated by global audiences, and investigated by leading scientists. And that, right there, is a stark example of just how far we have come technologically and as a society in the comparative blink of an geological eye – insane and surreal sounding concepts are no longer as insane or surreal.
Irrespective of where you sit on the subject though today, right here and right now, I can show you the technologies that will make this a reality, albeit a simulated one, and furthermore as we race towards this future from a gaming perspective at least we’ll be able to use these same technologies to create the ultimate unlimited gaming environment, of course, that is provided we aren’t already in one,

]]>WHY THIS MATTERS IN BRIEF
Humans always used to be the creators and machines the tool, but as a new breed of Creative Machines emerges in time they’ll become both the creator and the tool, and the implications will be nothing short of extraordinary.
TODAY, AS I lay out in more detail in my Future of Exponential Disruption codex, the companion guide to this codex, we are getting closer to the day when we’ll be able to realise global culture, industry, and society being disrupted in just a single day, and in part that vision is thanks to the emergence of a new breed of Creative Machines and exponential on demand manufacturing technologies that are already helping us tear up the increasingly antiquated innovation and business rule books.
While their mere existence might be a surprise to many Creative Machines that can design, innovate and then produce new digital content, as well as increasingly sophisticated physical and digital products, from cars and clothing to computer chips, drugs, and software, in real time are now on the ascendancy, and there’s no going back to the old status quo.
In an increasingly connected society, where the global rate of innovation is continually accelerating the fact shouldn’t be lost on you that we’re nearing a tipping point – a time when companies, individuals, and machines, either in isolation to one another or in harmony, are able to design, innovate, produce, market, and then sell new products and product concepts in an internet heartbeat, and all in an increasingly automated and autonomous way.
In this first of a kind Codex we’ll take a look at the exponential technologies that are already revolutionising how we create content and innovate products, and I’ll walk you through examples of how companies have already leveraged these amazing new tools to accelerate their own rates of innovation by millions fold – all of which will help bring about a new creative revolution unlike anything the world has ever seen before.
